Russian Classical Method Highlights

The Russian Classical Method is based on the simultaneous and integrated development of five core elements essential to mastering the piano:

  1. Fundamental technical skills – including proper hand position, posture, finger dexterity, hand coordination, and strength.
  2. Music reading and sight-reading – from the very first lesson, students learn music notation and develop skills to read music fluently, much like reading a book.
  3. Musical expression – students learn to control tone quality and convey musical character through phrasing, articulation, dynamics, balance, and skillful pedal use.
  4. Aural skills, memory, and rhythm – cultivated through targeted exercises that develop a musical ear, musical memory, and a strong sense of rhythm.
  5. Repertoire quality – a cornerstone of the Method. From the beginning, students learn works by J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann, and Schubert. Repertoire is carefully selected for each student to fit their personality, technical skills, and goals, and to cultivate musical imagination. By studying the works of great composers, students develop refined musical taste and a deep appreciation of classical music.
  6. Performing skills – developed through participation in studio recitals, where students master stage presence techniques, learn to connect musically with an audience, and experience the joy and excitement of live public performance. (Participation in recitals is encouraged but always voluntary.)
